Sexuality in Animals

Lately there have been a few posts about sexuality on the wiki. It’s a large topic and everyone has their own opinions on it. So I was wondering about homosexuality in animals, if it existed and if there are any ideas about why animals engaged in homosexual activities.

First I found an article about a squid, the Octopoteuthis deletron. Researchers have recently discovered that this deep-sea animal mates with both males and females. There are a few ideas about why this happens. One is that the encounters between these animals in the deep-sea are few, so to increase the possibilities of continuing the species they mate with any squid they encounter. Another idea is that the squids just can’t distinguish the differences between males and females. There is also the case of  the two chinstrap penguins who had lived together in a  New York Zoo. Apparently they had been together for 6 years and show signs of the mating rituals with each other. together they hatched a chick  and were even a basis for a book. Another animal that is more closely related to humans are apes. There is research being done on the sexuality of Bonobo apes.

The story of Roy and Silo, two male penguins who hatched a chick together.

The last question I have is how does homosexuality in animals relate to humans? I found one case of how homosexuality in animals relate, as shown below. (I also linked it to a National Geographic article)

Already, cases of animal homosexuality have been cited in successful court cases brought against states like Texas, where gay sex was, until recently, illegal.”

So my question to you guys. What do you think about gay animals? Do they have anything to do with humans? Do you think homosexuality in animals is acceptable to bring up in cases like the one above?

While this topic seems silly at first, it is actually very interesting and intriguing. I had never really thought about animals being gay, but there are so many similarities that humans share with other animals that it seems that it must be possible. I remember in Legally Blonde 2, Elle Woods’ dog Bruiser turns out to be gay. While this was just a funny anectodote in the movie, it actually could be an interesting topic to research and help prove the theory that homosexuality is genetic.

Aflorio2- LOL That part from Legally Blonde 2 was hilarious.

I have a friend of mine who told me that “(insert large number here) are tolerant of homosexuality. Only one is not”, or something along those lines.

I believe that most people who are against homosexuality are against it due to religious purposes and nothing else. In Ancient Athens, homosexuals were considered to be better than heterosexuals. What happened?
