Jumping into the Moon

I was stumbling upon and I came across this interesting article about “What would happen if I drilled a tunnel through the center of the Earth and jumped into it?” Seeing as the Earth has a molten core, and oceans all around it would be difficult. Hypothetically, if this was possible we could travel from one side of the Earth to the other in merely 42 minutes! This could potentially be done on the moon however due to the cold core, no atmosphere, and lack of groundwater. If you could dig a tunnel and have a ladder in the tunnel you could use that to slowly feel your weight decrease as you descend. This is because there is more of the moon’s mass above you, so it attracts you upward. And as you may have already figured out, once you get to the center, you’d be weightless. If you were to actually leap into the tunnel you would accelerate at a very high speed, then zoom through the center and start decelerating. Once you reached the other side you would start falling down the opposite direction and this oscillation would continue back and forth forever. I just thought that was interesting. What are your thoughts? Should we get a drilling team and open a Six Flags on the moon?

I would love to join you and make a six flags on the moon! and now I’m going to comment on something kind of off topic but still astronomy related. Apparently this whole week is drawing out tons of amateur astronomers because there is a visible supernova. This supernova is fading fast, and by the end of the week it will no longer be visible. This particular supernova was formed from the explosion of a white star. I think its pretty cool. Also making it unique are the physical details that this one is being seen at a young part of its life and its close! Dr. Peter Nugent guestimates, “The supernova is only located 21 million light-years away.” Fantastic, its only 21 million light years away. For some reason that was not what I was expecting when I read close.

I think that sounds like a pretty cool idea. I’ve always wished we could dig a hole through the earth and get to China in no time like my favorite cartoon characters on TV do. However, I know that its impossible. I’ve never though of doing the same to the moon though. Mainly because theirs no gravity or air, plus its pretty far away. Think of how much money Six Flags would be making. They would charge people for rocket ship transportation, space suits to breath and extra for authentic astronaut food. They’d make a killing. But still the thought is amazing.

Lets not forget that the deeper you go into the Earth the more pressure you are subjected to. Not even steel, dome shaped submarines can handle the pressure of water up to a certain depth. So… Jumping into a hole from one end of the Earth to another would probably squish you to a molten pulp. Not only that, the center of the Earth’s gravity is in the core. Even if it was cool enough and even if it had the pressure of 1 ATM, you’d be stuck at the Earth’s core forever…

Yay, we can deem you to be the God of Gravity, since you are the center of the Earth’s gravity. All hail….
